Designing dreams

Dec 27, 2017

I am a postgraduate in clothing and textiles, fortified for lectureship . I did lectureship for almost three years, found it boring, so left teaching job. As a hobby, I started embroidery and stitching project for home and friends. From there some friend suggested me to start up my own creations of designer dresses. I took up few orders and then started a boutique for again 3 years. It was a wonderful experience to be in the market and serve North Indian Style clothing to Gujarati people ( I am a Punjabi but a resident of Baroda, Gujarat). They were very happy with the unusual designer stuff. As expected, I had to close down the boutique to start my own family. But all through the pregnancy, I worked for the same.  Maybe that’s how my kids have the same taste of designing J

I took a break for almost 10 years, till my second kid grew up to be independent enough to manage herself. During that period, I was continuously surveying the market, the prevailing fashions, brands and retail patterns. This was the time of Internet, social media. Throughout this time, I was designing and making pretty girls’ dresses for my daughters and their friends. Again, the suggestions poured in from fellow mothers to go for my own creations.

I started from home with few orders and fabrics in stock. Then my husband suggested to go for an online shop. Hence, I introduced my brand – Mahikaa Creations on Facebook.

With the support of family and friends, I got a great response with that. Now, we have grown into an online fashion store having a range of fashion jewellery, bags, suits and sarees and handlooms from all states. I enjoy doing all this as I have all basic knowledge pf fashion and fabrics.

At times, I would get crazy and stitch my daughters’ dresses in a day be it fancy dress, navratri or birthday party dresses. Now i do freelance designing and suggest my patrons about colours, cuts and dressing too. They all love my choice of collections and confidence. I have clients from abroad too now. As part of my business, i have introduced my brand on online selling websites too like- Shopclues, Ebay.in, etc.

Apart from this, I am a home baker, love baking and designing cakes, cookies, breads and confectionaries, do embroideries , teach kids and their friends crafts. Being a resident of Gujarat for so many years, I love Garba and I like to do art work in free time.

A mother of two girls, who are my inspiration behind Mahikaa – Mahek + Tanishka, I dream to make it an all round lifestyle store in the future.
